Castillo San Felipe de Barajas

Cartagena has over 11 kilometers of walls and fortifications throughout the city. These fortifications played a vital role in the defense of this city where the treasures of the Americas were stored in preparation for transfer to Mother Spain.

We visited Castillo San Felipe de Barajas on its hill high above the city on Monday. It was interesting, but our guide's accent, combined with the unrelenting heat and no shade certainly diminished my appreciation.

Thank goodness we found an air conditioned patacón restaurant (Patacón con Todo) nearby where we enjoyed our first taste of patacónes. They are rather like a tostada on a plantain-based tortilla with all kinds of different choices for toppings. They were yummy!
