Izapa - Mayan Archeological Site

Saturday we also visited a Mayan archeological site called Izapa. They figure it is over 3500 years old. Several mounds are available for tourists to inspect along with carved steles scattered around the site.

Archeologists think this one is supposed to be a frog; perhaps the kind that exudes a hallucinogenic substance from the top of its head. The Mayans are said to have used them.

This is said to be the gnomon of a sundial, but the stones to indicate the time were gone. All in all it was a very interesting visit to an ancient site. We hope to visit more as we travel through Central America.
